Formal knowledge models are one of the underpinnings of the MAS4AI project. MAS4AI implements a Multi Agent System (MAS), with many assets in the manufacturing processes represented by agents. Knowledge models provide a common reference for knowledge among the agents and function as a basis for a common language in the use cases and in the project. There are two different sources of knowledge for the agent in MAS4AI: (1) knowledge about a manufacturing application domain, which is defined in the ontology and (2) characteristics and properties of individual agents, which are defined in the Asset Administration Shell (AAS). Within MAS4AI the latter serves to communicate more specific semantics and defines the messages sent between agents
