Less known ethnomedicinal plants of India

The tribals in remote areas completely depend on the traditional medicines to cure various diseases. In recent times, the use of traditional herbal medicines in healthcare has declined, particularly amongst the rural population. Due to rapid urbanization and easy availability of allopathic facilities, the interest in traditional medicines is gradually diminishing. This implies a risk of losing vital information from previous generations regarding plants and their uses in traditional medicine. As a result, the knowledge of ethnomedicinal plants became lesser day by day in upcoming generations. Thus, the documentation of less known ethnomedicinal plants to cure various health disorder naturally is highly essential for future which will be helpful to all. Therefore, an attempt has been made to document traditional knowledge of the ethnomedicinal plants from the traditional healers from field and literature survey. In the present study, 15 common plant species belonging to 10 families used in folk medicine are documented. Due to poor condition of modern healthcare facilities and poverty, indigenous people of the country fully or partially depend on local medicinal plants. For each less known medicinal flora, botanical name, vernacular name, part(s) used, popular medicinal use, forms of preparation and applications of the herbal remedies are provided. The collected information could help to discover new drugs for the pharmaceutical industry. The present study provides baseline information to discover new drug extraction in the future for further studies
