The banking sector in India is in a crisis with the increase in burden of bad loans provisioning and the decline in profitability of commercial sector banks particularly Public sector banks. Bad loans are a drag on bank resources for two reasons – one, they don’t earn any interest income and second, they lock up precious resources in the form of NPAs. Therefore, recovery of bad loans has assumed urgency. The value of loans in India increased 5.80 percent in December of 2016 over the same month in the previous year.
