A flux linkage-based dynamic model of a dual-star surface-mounted permanent-magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) is developed. The relation between flux linkages, phase currents and rotor position is studied in the rotor reference frame considering three different phenomena, namely saturation, cross-saturation, and magnetic saliency. Four different methods for the characterization of the dual-star PMSM are presented. The two first methods are based on the calculation of d-and q-axis inductances, which are suitable for lumped-parameter modeling, while the two others are based on look-up tables (LUTs).
