Role of Unsung Heroes of Thoothukudi District in Quit India Movement

he aim of this paper attempts to focus on the Role of Unsung heroes of Thoothukudi District in Quit India movement. Nationalism in India was an outcome against the oppressive and suppressive policies of the British Government. Mahatma Gandhi became a dynamic leader, guided the masses to participate effectively in the struggle for the freedom against British imperialism through various movements. The all India congress committee met at Bombay on 8 August 1942 and passed the famous “Quit Indian Resolution” to wage a final war against British. Gandhiji and the congress leaders were arrested on 9 August 1942. Following the arrest of national leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Abdul Kalam Azad, Jawaharlal Nehru and SardarVallabhbhai Patel a number of protest meetings were held throughout the Thoothukudi District. It gained momentum in the District between August and September 1942. The freedom fighters organized public meeting on 9 August to demonstrate against the British properties such as telephone and telegraph wires, railway lines, post offices, toddy shops and liquor shops, salt factories etc., and called for the British to quit India
