Bioplastics are materials that possess the functional properties of plastics, in terms of hardness, resistance, lightness, durability, ability to be thermal and electrical insulators, among others. They are produced, mostly, from natural and/or renewable sources and can even be biodegraded and/or composted. They arise mainly as a necessity due to the resistance to natural degradation that plastics from petrochemical sources have, causing increasing environmental pollution that affects both terrestrial and maritime ecosystems
