The process that allows living organisms to repair damage that occurs in DNA is called repair. All repair mechanisms are based on the fact that DNA is a double-stranded molecule, i.e. there are 2 copies of genetic information in the cell. If the nucleotide sequence of one of the two chains turns out to be damaged (altered), the information can be restored, since the second (complementary) chain is preserved.
