Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a sleep disorder that is characterized by periods of inadequate ventilation and apnea resulting from a narrowing of the tissue in the upper airway (Kapur et al., 2017). It is estimated that up to 14% of men and 5% of women from the ages of 30 to 70 years are affected by the condition (Peppard et al., 2013). Despite its significant prevalence, it is estimated that upwards of 90% of patients with OSA may be undiagnosed, which may be problematic for patients presenting for elective surgery (Hiestand et al., 2006).
