Prevalence of Retinal Vein Occlusion: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Background: In this study, we aimed to assess the prevalence of retinal vein occlusions (RVO) in countries of Europe. Methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis of the prevalence of RVO in Europe was carried out with respect to the Meta-Analyses of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (MOOSE) instructions in the databases including MEDLINE, Scopus, Embase, Google Scholar, and Web of Science. Statistical analysis was performed using Comprehensive Meta-analysis (CMA) software. Results: The pooled prevalence of RVO in Europe was estimated to be 0.7% (95% CI: 0.5–0.9%) using evaluation of 25,002 subjects from 4 prevalence investigations. The total number of affected patients in the Europe was calculated to increase by approximately 20% from 900,000 today to 1.1 million in 2050. Conclusion: There were few recent publications on the prevalence of RVO in Europe. With the estimated increase in affected subjects, more studies with larger sample size are required for appropriate healthcare planning
