Impact Of Coronavirus (Covid-19) Pandemic Lockdown On Students' Academic Activities In Federal College Of Education (Technical), Omoku, Rivers State: Implication For Counselling

The study investigated the impact of coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on infrastructure and social behaviour of students in Federal College of Education (Technical), Omoku, Rivers State. Four research questions and four hypotheses were formulated and test at 0.05 alpha level of significance to guide the study. This study adopted survey research design. Stratified random sampling technique was used to obtain a total of three schools out of Nineteen schools in the college with a total population of 600 students and 200 student were drawn from the total population. The instrument used for data collection was structured questionnaire with two sections and 15 items in relation to impact of coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on infrastructure and social behaviour of students. The instrument was correlated using four-point likert scale of Very High Extent (VHE), High Extent (HE), Low Extent (LE), and Very Low Extent (VLE). Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions, while t-test statistics was used to analyze the hypotheses at 0.05 alpha level of significance. The mean benchmark of 2.50 was accepted while any mean below 2.50 were rejected. The study revealed that there was high impact of corona virus (covid-19) pandemic on the social behaviour of students, high impact on teacher-student relationship of the students and high impact on the study approach of students in Federal College of Education (Technical), Omoku. Based on the findings, it was recommended amongst others that education authorities should step up adequate supervisions of learning activities and teaching transactions in the schools and implement the use of e-learning facilities in all schools so that in times of crisis teaching and learning can still be carried out effectively. Teachers/lecturers in colleges should attend conferences, seminars and workshops to acquire new knowledge on how to increase skills and competencies in utilising electronic and online teaching and learning technologies and counselling should also extend expertise to meet up lost ground
