Offline English Handwritten Recognition – A Detailed Survey

One of the most challenging and fascinating domains of pattern recognition is Handwritten recognition due to the extensive writing pattern and styles. Exhaustive work has been reported in this context but still an active research area considering its application and challenge. In this paper, a survey of major works related to offline handwritten English characters and digit recognition is presented. Each phase of OCR with a qualitative and quantitative analysis of different works was reported. A detailed description of various machine-learning techniques adapted for handwritten recognition and the standard databases used for experimentation is also presented. The result of different works reported is presented in a concise form as a comparative analysis and serves as an aid for researchers working in this direction.
