Analytical Research Laboratory, Department of Chemistry, Hindu College, Moradabad Manuscript received 12 August 1996, accepted 14 February 1997 A systematic chromatographic study of twentyfive toxic metal ions on tri-n-butyl phosphate modified silica gel-G layers using acetonenitric acid-water systems has been performed. The effect of mole fraction of acetone, nitric acid and water on Rf values has been explained. A number of binary and ternary separations has been achieved on these layers. In some cases, separation of one cation from numerous metal ions is possible. Lead has been quantitatively separated from eighteen toxic metal ions, and chromium from fifteen metal ions
