The purpose of the present study is to enumerate the extent, and analyze the causes and consequences of the prevailing rural poverty; and the way to get out of it. The study aims to accord both theoretical and empirical treatments to the issue of rural poverty. Especially. diverge theories of development and underdevelopment have been critically examined. An attempt has been made to examine the relevancy of different approaches so far as they relate to the alleviation of rural poverty in Bangladesh.
