Post-traumatic stress disorder is a debilitating psychological condition that can develop in some individuals following trauma. Examples of trauma include serious accidents, natural or man-made disasters, life-threatening illnesses, or physical or sexual assault. To be diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, an individual must show signs of aggression, avoidance, negative changes in cognitions and mood, and changes in arousal and reactivity in response to a traumatic experience. Studies have shown that individuals living in war zones or in areas where natural disasters are likely to occur, internally displaced ethnic minorities, asylum seekers and refugees are at high risk of developing posttraumatic stress disorder.
