Hypopterus Gill 1861

Genus Hypopterus Gill 1861 Diagnosis. Distinguished from other latid genera by the following combination of characters: scales on smooth horizontal limb of the preopercle; nostrils widely separated on each side of the head, anterior nostril a tube-shaped flap and posterior nostril oval and greatly enlarged; large observable scales on posterior part of maxilla (Fig. 3B); pored lateral line scales extending onto median membrane of caudal-fin rays; no tooth patches on supralamellar tooth patch on the outer face of the first four gill arches and no tooth patch on the basihyal; denticulations on ventral border of first and second infraorbital bones; no parapophysis on the first 5 abdominal vertebrae; epineurals on the first 7‒8 abdominal vertebrae; supraneural bones formula 0/0/0 + II/I + I/; dorsal-fin rays VII‒ I, 15; anal-fin rays III, 14; caudal fin with posterior border rounded; procurrent spur present; caudal spur absent; vertebrae 11 + 14 = 25. Occurrence.
