The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) disposed of part of its antiquarian library by sale and disposal through a process which began in 2011 and was completed in 2015. This paper outlines the reasons that led to this decision, its execution and the benefits to the library and institution deriving from it. The disposal of library collections, especially by sale, is a sensitive topic within the library profession and academic research communities.
