Ciudades y latinización: el estudio de caso del conventus Pacensis

El latín se propagó rápidamente en el Occidente romano, a pesar de que no existía una política lingüística activa dentro del imperio. Se han establecido muchos factores que contribuyeron a esta latinización. Este artículo investigará el papel del urbanismo utilizando la metodología de la sociolingüística, concretamente la geolingüística. El trabajo se centra en el conventus Pacensis, esta región dentro de la provincia de Lusitania es de interés debido a su ubicación periférica dentro del imperio y el bajo grado de urbanización. El artículo muestra que las ciudades, y otros centros suprarregionales, son los focos de latinización. Latin spread quickly in the Roman West, even though there was no active language policy within the empire. Many factors that contributed to this Latinization have been established. This paper will investigate the role of urbanism using methodology of sociolinguistics, specifically geolinguistics. The paper focusses on the conventus Pacensis, this region within the province of Lusitania is of interest due to its peripheral location within the empire and the low urbanization rate. The paper shows that the cities, and other supraregional centra, are the foci for Latinization
