Status of women in India has been different during different periods of time. In the vedic period (4000 BC-1500 BC) the position of women was respectable and her role effective. The post-Vedic period (1500 BC – 500 BC) show that the women’s position improved with respect to holding a property. The last century saw a paradigm shift in the status of women from being a weaker sex to equal sex. The first effort to empower women on the global level was made in 1975, the year which was observed as the international women’s year with the motto Equality, Development and peace.
