The article stems from discussions on subjugating journalism to the capitalist imperative of ‘rationalisation’ of the labour process through technological innovations. A continuation of these tendencies is the gradual introduction of algorithms with the aim to supplement, enhance or replace journalistic work with technology. The apotheosis of this process is automated journalism, although it primarily supplements the established news production. Accompanying controversies raise challenging questions about what and how we know via journalism and how that knowledge is substantiated.
