DISCUSSION ON RIGHT TO CLEAN DRINKING WATER- A BASIC HUMAN RIGHT

United Nations General Assembly has, through Resolution no. 64/292 dated July 28, 2010, recognized clean drinking water and sanitation as a basic human right. As a result, several International Organizations and world nations have stepped into strengthening their legal and policy based system to manage the affairs of providing clean water to its citizen. Writing in the Indian context, the present research paper is an investigation of facts relating to efforts made by government and judiciary on giving the level of preference to this pertinent issue of global importance and how they are focusing on supply of clean drinking water and violation of basic human right to access to clean drinking water and sanitation respectively. Further, the research paper highlights the current data of drinking water crisis in few Indian states to drag the attention of readers and policy makers and push the government to re-think and re-plan the drinking water management system in the country which has been given primary importance as a fundamental right by Supreme Court and various high courts from time to time
