Drugs - between prevention, desintoxification and sensibilization

200 million people (about 5% of the world's population aged 15 to 64) have used illicit drugs at least once in the last 12 months according to the report 2005 UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime), which is 15 million more than the previous year; this number is increasing, because the drug trade is developed as it is pernicious and the drug economy represents a market of 400 to 500 billion dollars per year. In Africa, the drug problem are not the same in all countries. Some countries have very high consumption rates, while others are relatively spared. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) report published in 2019, drug use in Africa is on the rise, especially among young people where the most commonly used drugs are marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines and opioids. This consumption can have harmful consequences on the physical and mental health of consumers, as well as on social and professional relationships. Drug problems can also lead to addiction and criminal behavior. Also known as psychoactive substances, drugs are chemicals that alter the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system. Drug consumption is influenced by multiple personal or environmental factors that are complex and dynamic to be apprehended in a formalized model. However, at the macro level, demographic and socioeconomic factors tend to be correlated with higher levels of drug use. To fight this scourge, governments are implementing policies for prevention, treatment and the fight against drug traffickers. Detoxification centers and support programs are also set up in several countries to help people who have drug problems. Aware that the consumption of drugs has become more than worrying and that it generates serious consequences on the physical and mental health of its consumers, it is important for everyone to be a craftsman in the fight against this creeping scourge which strikes at all the doors without warning.
