Novel Reactions of Cobalt(ll) Salts with Dibenzoylmethane and Nitrogen Donor Ligands

Department of Chemistry, Regional Engineering College, Rourkela-769 008 Manuscript received 3 May 1980, revised 29 July 1980, accepted 9 September 1980 Reactions of cobaltous salts with dibenzoylmethane and nitrogen donor ligands in varied stoichiometric proportions resulted in the formation of a series of complexes of the type [Co X(bzbz)(H2O)3], [Co X(bzbz) L2H2O], [Co X(bzbz) L2], [Co X(bzbz) L'(H2O)2], [Co X(bzbz)2L], [Co(bzbz) L2 (H2O)2](ClO4), [Co(bzbz) L"(H2O)2](CIO4)2 and [Co(NO3)(bzbz)(H2O)2 ] (where X=CI- or Br-, bzbz.H=Dibenzoylmethane, L= Pyridine or substituted pyridine, L'=Qninoline or Isoquinoline and L"=2,2'-bipyridine or 1, 10-phenanthroline). The compounds were characterised and possible stereochemistry deduced on the basis of analytical data, spectra (i. r. and electronic) conductivity and thermal decomposition studies.
