The article is devoted to the analysis of two types of motivation in a foreign language learning, namely – intrinsic (internal) and extrinsic (external). John M. Keller’s educational model of motivation and its main components (attention, relevance, confidence and satisfaction) has been analyzed. The stages of motivational design proposed by John M. Keller have also been under our consideration. The article describes the types of motivation and what is related to it. Thus, the basis of intrinsic motivation is satisfaction with the process of activity itself, the results of intrinsically motivated behavior have a longer lasting effect and a higher degree of quality.
