Abstract

Intramolecular acylation of lactones to yield cyclopentenones in the presence of polyphosphoric acid has been extended to δ-lactones. Based on this, convenient, possibly general, routes to bicyclo. [0 : 3: 3]--octane and bicyclo-[o :3 :4]-nonane systems have been described. The reaction has been discussed from the mechanistic point of view
