How do we read dramatic texts? In order to answer this question, this work assembles and analyzes a corpus of commentaries written by French-speaking scholars between 1880 and 2020 about various dramatic and theatrical texts (from Euripides to Angélica Liddell). This investigation is metacritical and historiographic: it focuses on the theoretical presuppositions of the studied commentaries, on the critical debates in which they are inscribed and developed, on the disciplinary organizations that in part determine them, on their particular argumentative aims, but also to the states of the commented theater and literature and of the theater and literature contemporary to the commentary.
