Manières de lire les textes dramatiques. Métacritique, historiographie, théorie (XIXe-XXIe siècles)

How do we read dramatic texts? In order to answer this question, this work assembles and analyzes a corpus of commentaries written by French-speaking scholars between 1880 and 2020 about various dramatic and theatrical texts (from Euripides to Angélica Liddell). This investigation is metacritical and historiographic: it focuses on the theoretical presuppositions of the studied commentaries, on the critical debates in which they are inscribed and developed, on the disciplinary organizations that in part determine them, on their particular argumentative aims, but also to the states of the commented theater and literature and of the theater and literature contemporary to the commentary. In order to better understand the possible specificities of this corpus, some observations are put into perspective: with the situation in some non-French speaking countries on the one hand, and with non-academic criticism on the other hand. Based on these observations - in particular those relating to the interpretative mechanisms activated and to the “scenic” imagination of the critics - and on the numerous theoretical clarifications it offers, this investigation continues with an exercise in theorizing. It proposes a reflection on the various ways of reading the theater and identifies their hermeneutic and didactic stakes - paying attention to various determining intermedial or transmedial phenomena -, and argues for their inclusion in the current reflection on the apprehension of dramatic and theatrical fictions.One of the hypotheses explored in this work is that there is in France (among others) a background discourse on the reading of theatrical texts (and of dramatic texts that can be read as such) that becomes standardized at the end of the 19th century and that participates in federating an interpretive community at the university: that of theatrical specialists (who are historians, linguists, philosophers, etc.). This background discourse consists in refusing the literary reading of theater texts and in encouraging a way of reading - called scenic reading in this work - that is recognized as being better adapted, according to various critical, historical and theoretical arguments, some of which become real topoï. These are (re)interrogated in these pages in the light of the most recent developments in fields that are not often mobilized for the study of theater texts - namely theories of reading, theories of fiction, transmedial narratology, so-called “general” aesthetics, the history of publishing, etc. -, without forgetting the propositions of the study of the relations between text and stage since the 19th century, theories of theatrical representation, semiology, etc. This work leads to several theoretical proposals, particularly designed to facilitate a sometimes difficult interdisciplinary dialogue: it organizes the answers given to important questions by critics and theorists and points out some useful avenues for further research.Comment lisons-nous les textes dramatiques? Pour fournir des éléments de réponse, ce travail assemble et analyse un corpus de commentaires écrits par des universitaires francophones entre 1880 et 2020 à propos de textes dramatiques et théâtraux variés (d’Euripide à Angélica Liddell). Cette enquête est métacritique et historiographique: elle prête attention aux présupposés théoriques des commentaires étudiés, aux débats critiques dans lesquels ils s’inscrivent et plus encore s’élaborent, aux organisations disciplinaires qui les déterminent en partie, à leurs visées argumentatives propres, mais aussi aux états du théâtre et de la littérature commentés et contemporains du commentaire. Afin de cerner au mieux les éventuelles spécificités de ce corpus, certaines observations sont mises en perspective: d’une part avec la situation dans certains pays non francophones, d’autre part avec la critique non universitaire. Sur la base de ces observations – en particulier celles ayant trait aux mécanismes interprétatifs activés et à l’imagination «scénique» des critiques – et des nombreuses mises au point théoriques auxquelles l’enquête donne lieu, le travail se poursuit par un exercice de théorisation. Il s’agit de réfléchir aux diverses manières de lire le théâtre et d’identifier leurs enjeux herméneutiques et didactiques – dans une attention à divers phénomènes intermédiaux ou transmédiaux déterminants –, afin d’encourager leur prise en compte dans la réflexion actuelle sur l’appréhension des fictions dramatiques et théâtrales.L’une des hypothèses explorées par ce travail est qu’il existe en France (notamment) un discours de fond sur la lecture des textes de théâtre (et des textes dramatiques pouvant être lus comme tels) qui se standardise à la fin du XIXe siècle et qui participe à la fédération d’une communauté interprétative à l’université: celle des spécialistes de théâtre (qui sont historiennes et historiens, linguistes, philosophes, etc.). Ce discours de fond consiste à estimer que la lecture littéraire des textes de théâtre est insuffisante et à encourager une manière de lire reconnue comme étant mieux adaptée – appelée lecture scénique dans ce travail –, au gré de divers arguments critiques, historiens et théoriques dont certains deviennent de véritables topoï. Ceux ci sont (ré)interrogés dans ces pages à la lumière des développements les plus récents dans des domaines peu mobilisés pour l’étude des textes de théâtre – à savoir les théories de la lecture, les théories de la fiction, la narratologie transmédiale, l’esthétique dite «générale», l’histoire de l’édition, etc. –, sans oublier les acquis propres à l’étude des relations entre les textes et les scènes depuis le XIXe siècle, aux théories de la représentation théâtrale, à la sémiologie, etc. Ce travail aboutit à plusieurs propositions théoriques, pensées notamment pour faciliter un dialogue interdisciplinaire parfois difficile: il organise les réponses données à certaines questions importantes par des critiques et par des théoriciennes et théoriciens et signale quelques pistes utiles à des recherches ultérieures
