Role of Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods in Prevention and Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Review

Diabetes Mellitus is a group of metabolic diseases characterised by hyperglycaemia resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Chronic hyperglycaemia is associated with long-term damage, dysfunction, and failure of various organs, especially eye, kidneys, nerves, heart and blood vessels. Diabetes is the most prominent disease for which alternative medicine is necessary for treatment apart from synthetic drugs. Several Nutraceuticals in clinical practice have shown to target the pathogenesis of Diabetes Mellitus as well as delay or prevent complications. This review was performed to analyze and search for Nutraceuticals which can contribute as a therapeutic agent in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
