Recent Central Statistics Office (CSO, 2021) figures have shown that Ireland’s newcomer population is now over 640,000 which constitutes 12.9% of the total population, a figure that has been on an upward trajectory since 2015. This rise in newcomer families has meant that Ireland’s post-primary schools have become more multicultural, multilingual and diverse educational spaces, with an estimated 12% of all post-primary students classified as newcomer students. As a result, post-primary teachers’ have had to adapt their teaching pedagogies and methodologies to support, accommodate and include these learners.
