Historic urban areas of Chernihiv, wooden and brick buildings in the city during the 19th – early 20th centuries

The purpose of this publication is to investigate the processes of urban development in the formation of the historical urban areas of Chernihiv as a provincial center, as well as to highlight the features of local wooden and brick buildings during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Among the methods used for the study, one can distinguish problem-chronological in terms of material structuring, as well as analytical and critical, on which the processing of the information obtained was based. The scientific novelty is represented first of all by a study of wooden and brick buildings in Chernihiv in relation to the historical areas of the city. Such topics can be safely attributed to those lacunae that have not yet received adequate coverage in the scientific literature. Conclusions. Beginning with the 19th century, when the city began to expand rapidly, data on Chernihiv historical areas began to be recorded in the scientific literature. Despite the fact that this topic was first explored in the pre-revolutionary times, the greatest contribution to the coverage of the problem was made by the researchers of the Independent Ukraine era, namely S. Lepyavko, V. Sapon, and V. Rudenok. The proposed study, in line with its stated goal, managed to cover two topics at once: the history of the formation of the most famous urban areas and the history of their construction with wooden and brick houses. It should be noted that the rapid urbanization that occurred in many cities of the empire bypassed Chernihiv. In all the guides and memoirs of Chernihiv it was mentioned as a quiet, green city, which was flooded in the gardens. It is logical to make the assumption that the main mistake of architects of the early 19th century was that they created a provincial city within the old buildings, instead of moving the new center to vacant areas north of the old Chernihiv. At the same time, there were some positives to the restructuring. The new wide streets were laid out quite conveniently according to the requirements of new times
