Trafficking in human beings in South-Eastern Europe: diversity of forms

Trafficking in human beings is a violation of the freedom and dignity of the individual. It covers all regions, including Southeastern Europe. Southeastern Europe is a region of origin, transit and destination of victims of trafficking. Various models of human trafficking have been formed in the region and almost all forms are used: human trafficking for the purpose of sexual exploitation, forced labor, child trafficking, begging, fictitious marriages, organ trafficking, etc. The Republic of Moldova has faced this phenomenon since the mid-1990s. Being a part of Southeastern Europe, Moldova experienced the processes similar to the countries in this region. Moldova is a source country and in less extent a transit country for victims of trafficking in human beings, and is faced with forms of trafficking to the region. State and public institutions are making efforts to combat this criminal phenomenon, but the number of victims of human trafficking in Moldova remains quite high
