After Moldova gained independence, the number of Ukrainians (as well as the total population) decreased significantly. If in the previous period the number of Ukrainians had grown continuously, in 1979 – 560,679 (14.2%), 1989 – 600,366 (13.8%), then after 1991 their number began to noticeably decline. In 2004, there were already 442,475 people (in the territory controlled by the central authorities – 282,406 (8.4%), in the territory of the unrecognized Transnistrian Moldovan Republic (TMR) – 160,069 (28.82%).
