The purpose of this screening environmental Life Cycle Assessment is to identify the most probable hotspots in the life cycle and where more in-depth information is necessary, and provide recommendations on the most promising options and configurations from an environmental point of view. The results of this study show that the CLEANKER technology (calcium looping) can contribute to the reduction of the climate change impact of cement (around 73% less impact compared to a reference cement plant without CO2 capture). Hotspots of clinker production with the calcium looping technology are fuel and electricity consumption, which is the reason why a further improvement can be achieved by using energy from renewable sources.
