Strongly debated by Victorian writers, the ‘Woman Question’ constituted one of the most controversial topic of that eponymous society. Established to ensure men’s illegitimate control over women, the patriarchal system promoted active roles for them, whereas women were attributed passive ones. As a woman, Charlotte Brontë was also undergoing such gender discriminations, which led her to criticize this system in one of her prominent works, Jane Eyre. Accordingly, this article aims at examining Victorian women’s alienation. A stress will be laid on men’s mistreatments of women and the psychological manifestations of such inhuman treatments
