ANTIOXIDANT AND FREE RADICAL SCAVENGING PROPERTIES OF RHIZOPHORA MUCRONATA LAMK. STEM

ABSTRACT Free radicals are implicated for various diseases including diabetes mellitus, atherosclerosis, cataract, rheumatism, and other auto immune disease like aging etc. in treatment of these diseases antioxidant therapy has gained an extreme significance. Now-a-days research is directed towards finding naturally occurring antioxidant of plant origin. The aim of the present study was to investigate the antioxidant property of crude extracts from the stem of Rhizophora mucronata. In vitro antioxidant properties of the extracts were analysed by DPPH, hydroxyl radical scavenging activity, Superoxide radical scavenging activity, ABTS radical scavenging activity and reducing power assays. The present study showed that the R.mucronata stem extracts possess notable antioxidant property. KEYWORDS: R.mucronata, Reactive oxygen species, Free radicals, Extracts, ABTS
