How to implement Open Science in your group

Open science starts with open conversation and two way communication. I advocate for having a continuous conversation with all members of the laboratory to learn about their values and goals and then aligning these with open science actions. Often, this starts with a laboratory charter (you can see ours at our lab website) that outlines shared community principles. When it comes to open science, there are many actions each researcher and the lab together can take. It includes: 1) sharing the methods and code in a version controlled environment that would ensure both reproducibility and interoperability of science; 2) uploading DNA, seed stocks as well as datasets to public repository to replace or supplement “available upon demand” statements in the papers 3) posting slides videos of conference presentations on lab website or youtube so that the data you presented is available to all audiences beyond people who had the privilege of viewing it at the time of the event 4) pre-printing your work and collecting peer reviews from all community members interested to provide comments ahead of the journal submission. There are many other actions each lab can take, and I think it is also important to have conversations and learn from each other in panel workshops such as this one
