This work systematically quantifies groundwater’s effect on the roof stability of underground openings in shallow coal mines and indirectly assesses the potential for sinkhole formation. A specific stratigraphy was analyzed where the opening instability can lead to sinkhole formation, given the geological conditions, the overburden stratigraphy, and the depth of the openings. The groundwater recharge was investigated as an individual rainfall infiltration (short-term) and as groundwater dynamics (long-term), representing the accumulation of infiltrated rainwater with time.
