A Standard Ontology Library of Patterns for Cross-Domain Reuse

Key high-level modeling patterns have been identified over the last several years that are increasingly replacing ad hoc components of the Financial Industry Business Ontology (FIBO). Testing with user/contributor data sets has proven that reusing these patterns increases user understanding as well as efficiency in applications of such a large and complex ontology. Some are similar to patterns found in other pattern libraries, but others are novel. FIBO participants with cross-industry experience recognized the need for the same patterns in biomedical informatics, retail, robotics, and other domain areas where ontologies have been proposed for standardization at the Object Management Group (OMG), but they are also relevant for the Industrial Ontology Foundry (IOF), for example. Standardization of an initial domain independent library designed for extensibility is underway at the OMG, with publication anticipated later this year. In this talk, Ms. Kendall will present the original motivation from an OMG-perspective, which is to enable the use of multiple vocabularies with model-based development and systems engineering. She will outline the criteria for inclusion and describe some of the patterns in the library, including examples of their application in specific domain areas such as finance and retail
