Basic Psychological Needs and Motivation in Mathemathics Performance of Junior High School Students

Multiple studies suggest that the low level of basic psychological needs in terms of autonomy, competence and relatedness and high level of motivation in terms of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation will enable students to have a better academic performance. This study aimed to determine if the level of basic psychological needs and level of motivation can influence the academic performance of junior high school students in Mathematics. Correlation and regression analysis showed that the basic psychological needs in terms of autonomy, competence and relatedness can influence the academic performance of junior high school students in Mathematics, which means that the lower the level of basic psychological needs, the better the academic performance of students. In terms of motivation, both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation can also influence the academic performance of junior high school students in mathematics, which means that the higher the level of motivation, the better the academic performance of students
