Studies in Copper(ll) Chelates: Part I. α, α'=Dipyridyl Mono- (biguanide) Copper(II) and o-Phenanthroline Mono(biguaoide) Copper(II) Complexes

A series of new heterochelates [Cu (dipy) (BigH)] X2, [Cu (o-phen) (BigH)] X2, [Cu (dipy) (MeBigH)]X2, [Cu (dipy) (EtBigH)] X2 (where dipy= \(\alpha\), \(\alpha\)-dipyridyl, o-phen=1, 10-phenanthroline, BigH=bigu­anide, MeBigH=Methylbiguanide, EtBigH=ethylbiguanide and X= CI, Br or I) etc. have been synthesized and characterised. The complexes are all highly crystalline, coloured and behave as bi-univalent electrolytes in aqueous solution and also in methanol. Their magnetic moments(\(\simeq\)1.80 B.M.) coupled with the absorp­tion spectra in solid state, in water and in methanol, ethanol, DMSO and ethyleneglycol (for the iodide salt) lead to the proposition of distorted octahedral structure. The spectra in aqueous medium give one rather broad, somewhat asymmetric band whereas that in methanol and other solvents for the iodides split into two
