Infrared Spectra of N-Hydroxy.-N,N'-Diarylbenzamidines

Manuscript received 16 June 1975; revised 14 February 1976; accepted 19 March 1976 Condensation of N-arylbenzimidoyl chlorides with N-phenylhydroxylamine in absolute ether medium furnished N-bydroxy-N-phenyl-N'-arylbenzamidines. Seven such new compounds have been synthesized and their infrared spectra examined. The probable assignments have been made for the principal bands, C=\(_N^+\),=\(_{NH}^+\), C=N, C-N and OH .. N. The studies provided evidence that the intramolecular OH . N bonds are stronger than OH ...O bonds
