The presentation shows the application of the theory of the exact state observers in continuous LTI processes with selected structures. The process is described by the input-output model given by n-th order differential equation and the observer enables identification of the place where the abrupt changes in physical parameters occured. The observer has a special double window structure and reconstructs the derivatives of the output signal. Detection of the steps in the derivatives of the output indicates where the failure has occurred
