Abstract: Resistance to many of the current antibacterial agents is now an alarming health problem worldwide, necessitating a proactive effort to identify new targets and for the development of entirely different antibacterial drugs. Filamenting temperature-sensitive mutant Z (FtsZ), an analogue of eukaryotic tubulin, is an essential and highly conserved bacterial cytokinesis protein considered as attractive target for anti-bacterial drug discovery. Curcumin, a naturally occurring dietary polyphenolic compound is found to bind to FtsZ in vitro with a dissociation constant of 7.3±1.8 μM.
