The review article presents a retrospective analysis of attempts to develop effective vaccines for pseudomonas prophylaxis. P. aeruginosa vaccine has been sought for 40 years; however it is still not available. The increased understanding of P. aeruginosa pathogenesis and its virulence factors supported the recognition of potential immunogens and passive immunotherapy that could be used for the development of an effective vaccine. These immunogens are situated in structural components such as lipolysaccharides, pili, flagella, outer membrane proteins or are part of secreted products such as proteases, exotoxins and mucoid exopolysaccharides.
