Formation of the Adventure Genre in Ukrainian Cinema of the First Half of the 1920s

The purpose of the article is to investigate the formation of the adventure genre in Ukrainian cinema in the first half of the 1920s based on the analysis of genre and thematic features of national films about the Civil War. The research methodology is based on a system of general research principles, methods, and scientific approaches. The authors of the article apply complex and systematic methods; principles of historicism, objectivity, comprehensiveness, which provide a multipronged study of the object and subject of research, and also make it possible to consider the features of the adventure genre of Ukrainian cinema of the first half of the 1920s in the context of cultural interrelations and interdependencies. Scientific novelty. For the first time in Ukrainian art studies, a systematic analysis of the genre and thematic features of adventure films made by domestic cinematographers in the first half of the 1920s was carried out. Conclusions. The evolution of domestic screen art has demonstrated different variations of adventure films about the Civil War, created by specialists of the All-Ukrainian Photo- Cinema Administration (VUFKU) in the first half of the 1920s. By analysing the Ukrainian and Russian specialised journals of that time, it is proved that most of the films of the adventure genre were of poor quality from an artistic point of view and were not very popular with the viewers and critics. To a large extent, this was due to the fact that the formation of many traditions of the adventure genre of Ukrainian cinema took place in the context of rethinking of the national features of the Civil War in Ukraine and at the same time under the pressure of the communist ideology that dominated Soviet cinema
