This talk summarises work towards developing open-source software to estimate respiratory rate from wearables, including: the development of a toolbox of open-source respiratory rate algorithms, a vision for biomedical signal processing software, and pressing questions for future work. Presented on 8 April 2022 at 'Development of Software as a Medical Device', an event organised by the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine.Funded by an EPSRC Impact Acceleration Award, and the British Heart Foundation Grant FS/20/20/34626
