Nursing a patient with type 2 diabetes after SARS-CoV-2 infection

Nursing a patient with type 2 diabetes after SARS-CoV-2 infection Diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases, also called the first non-communicable epidemic in the world. It is a huge social problem and a challenge to the healthcare system. Diabetes is not more likely to cause SARS-CoV-2 infection than in other individuals in the population, but it is more likely to develop severe complications in these patients. In well-managed diabetes, the risk of “post-covid” complications is the same as in the rest of the population. The aim of the study was to show the nursing problems of a patient with type 2 diabetes after COVID-19 infection and how to solve them. The study uses the case study method and techniques: interview, observation, measurements of vital signs and analysis of medical records. Observation and care was provided to a patient who required hospitalization due to health negligence. Virginia Henderson’s model of meeting the patient’s needs and assisting her to become independent was implemented in providing nursing care to the patient. The core nursing problems occurring in a patient with type II diabetes after COVID-19 infection areas follows: non-systematic medication intake and non-adherence to diet recommendations resulting from a lack of knowledge, patient’s anxiety caused by poor health condition due to a past COVID-19 infection, lack of acceptance of the disease and motivation for treatment resulting from lack of support and care from the family, risk of diabetesrelated complications and co-morbidities. The nursing plan based on the identified nursing problems facilitated the nursing care for the patient. Nursing interventions, especially the patient’s education, condition a higher level of ability to live independently at home. Motivational family support is best for the patient, but if it is not possible, the patient may receive support from a nurse or from an informal caregiver assisted by a nurse. A holistic approach to nursing the patient, staging the process and continuity of care could be achieved through the use of the nursing process plan.
