Adiponectin is an adipocyte-derived protein that has gained considerable research interest because of its pleiotropic effects on insulin sensitivity, atherosclerosis and inflammation. Lower concentrations of adiponectin have been linked to subsequent risk of coronary heart disease in healthy individuals.
