М. Тимошенко & К. Горішний «Герой поневолі»: комікс-візуалізація актуальності громадянського міжетнічного діалогу в Україні

This study shows the results of an analytical reading of two works of different types of art but developing the same plot. The “The Reluctant Hero” (1904) story of I. Franko is a typical example of Ukrainian classical literature of the 19th century, it reflects the mood and ideas of those days. The graphic novel by Mihai Timoshenko & Cyril Gorishny “The Reluctant Hero” (2015–2018) based on the novel by I. Franko is a modern interpretation of the classic plot by means of a “drawn story”, which was undertaken by the authors with a double purpose: firstly, to familiarize the reader with a little-known work of the “iconic” Ukrainian author , secondly, to accustom Ukrainians to a new format of publications of “meaningful” literature. The simultaneous presence in the cultural space of “identical” (different) works should provoke discussion, the potential results of which we tried to predict. The relevance of this issue for modern Ukraine is confirmed by the works of researchers of the Sub-Austrian Galicia of the late XVIII – early XX century. Representatives of various branches of humanitarian knowledge record the extreme importance of Lviv history of the XIX century in the process of formation of the Ukrainian identity. A cultural study of the time and space of Lemberg proves that inter-ethnic dialogue was not a mutually respectful and harmonious process, and multinational space always raises the question of the hegemony of one of the peoples. No less important for modern Ukraine is the problem of post-revolutionary creation, where the ability to just work honestly is especially valuable - the main quality of a “reluctant hero”
