Gestational hypertension, chronic hypertension, preeclampsia, and preeclampsia superimposed on pre-existing hypertension are the four categories into which the National High Blood Pressure Education Program of the NHLBI divides hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. Pregnant women with hypertension are at risk for death, renal failure, heart failure, hepatic rupture, cerebral edema, and cerebrovascular accidents. The foetuses of hypertension mothers are at risk for stillbirth, intrauterine growth restriction, and preterm birth difficulties after delivery due to maternal symptoms.
