In the article were disclosed the concepts of mergers and acquisitions and principal differences between these processes. The main motives of mergers and acquisitions were analyzed, and it is justified that through mergers and acquisitions corporations can develop a competitive advantage and ultimately increase the exchange value of shares, diversify production, achieve economies of scale, and enter new national markets. The waves of mergers and acquisitions, their history and main characteristics were examined and analyzed. The conclusion is justified that for several centuries mergers and acquisitions transactions played an important role in the development of international business and the economy as a whole.
