Analysis of Coping Mechanisms by Emancipated Women to combat Household Food Security in Kalagala Sub-County of Luweero, Uganda

Different groups have developed coping mechanisms towards combating household food security. The mechanisms to combat food security/ insecurity remain a necessity for all. Analysis of techniques or unique behavior by different groups amounts to coping strategies. Understanding the implemented coping strategies at household level is critical for formulating and implementing appropriate policy and design programs related to food insecurity. Despite these generalizations, there exists a gap in specific discourses that attempt to address coping mechanisms especially emancipated women in combating household food security/ insecurity which this study endeavours to fill by a focus on Kalagala Sub-County of Luweero, Uganda. This study used two objectives; analyzing coping mechanisms by emancipated women to combat household food security in Kalagala Sub-County of Luweero and examining whether Women Empowerment leads to a positive attitude towards household food security in Kalagala sub-county of Luweero to come up with findings from a primary research which can be applied in similar environments. This research underpins itself to The Resilience theory which is propounded by psychologists who affirm that individuals do not just emerge in adversity to fair well in their undertakings especially women in developing countries. They must be psychologically prodded in order to attain an attitude that makes emancipation possible. The study employed descriptive research design with both qualitative and quantitative methods of analysis being conducted in Kalagala sub-county of Luweero district, found in central Uganda. A sample size was 380 households drawn from Yamane (1967) formula. The researchers used both questionnaires and interviews to collect data. Data analysis of data was done both quantitatively and qualitatively. In its conclusions, determining how to build on and use women’s knowledge base so that modern technologies can benefit from it and strengthen women’s efforts remains a problem.
